About
Buenaventuras
Spanish for "good fortunes" — the old sailors' blessing for a journey about to begin.
The Name
Buenaventura is what you wish someone setting out to sea: good fortune, safe passage, fair winds. We chose it because it captures what a great trip actually needs — not luck, but the feeling of luck. The table that happens to be free at sunset, the beach that happens to be empty, the guide who happens to know exactly where the whales were this morning.
Our job is to manufacture that feeling in advance, quietly, so that when you're there it just feels like fortune.
What We Believe About Travel
Depth beats breadth. We plan the Caribbean — starting with the Dominican Republic — rather than the whole world, because good recommendations come from knowing the second-best option too.
The destination is people. Beaches photograph well, but what travelers remember is the cook, the captain, the guide. We plan around people and let the scenery do its job.
Honesty is a service. Some beaches have seaweed seasons. Some "must-sees" aren't worth the drive. Some resorts are better than villas for your group. You'll hear it from us straight — before you spend money, not after.
Pace is part of design. An itinerary that impresses on paper and exhausts in person is a failure. We schedule less than we could, on purpose.
How We Choose Partners
Every villa, driver, guide, and operator we recommend is someone we would book for our own family. Practically, that means: licensed and insured where the category requires it, consistent over time rather than impressive once, honest about their own limits, and fair to their staff. When we haven't yet verified someone to that standard, we don't recommend them — even if it means telling you an experience isn't available.
